Dr. Keshavulu, MD, a popular psychiatrist and noted social activist in north telangana, stated that the number of children with autism is increasing worldwide, including in India. According to the Indian Scale Assessment of Autism, there are approximately more than 2 million children with autism in India.
Speaking to The T. times Correspondent on phone conversation about the rising of Autism spectrum disorders ( ASD ), Dr.Keshavulu emphasized that autism spectrum disorder encompasses a broad range of complex neurobehavioral conditions that typically manifest in early childhood and may persist throughout a person’s life. The disorder often leads to impaired social interaction, delayed language development, and inadequate non-verbal communication skills, alongside rigid, repetitive behavior.
Dr. Keshavulu explained the severity of this developmental disorder, which significantly impacts the ability to communicate and engage in social interactions. Unfortunately, due to limited knowledge and awareness, many parents delay seeking treatment, posing challenges for the child to overcome these complexities. Dr. Keshavulu highlighted that nearly 80 percent of a child’s brain develops within the first 36 months (three years), making early intervention crucial, ideally starting between one to two years of age.
He lamented the tendency of some parents to isolate their children with autism, leading to their exclusion from social interactions and exacerbating challenges for both the child and parents. Stressing that there is no quick cure for autism, Dr. Keshavulu advised parents to set realistic expectations. He assured that early detection and diagnosis of autism, coupled with timely intervention and support, significantly enhance long-term outcomes for affected children and their families.
